The Balinese believe that when a performer wears a mask that he becomes the character they are portraying, or that the mask comes to life. The mask are blessed by a Hindu priest before each performance. The performances are considered sacred. And an important part of Balinese culture.
This mask is the frog, colorful and fun! He was carved in the Ubud area by a highly skilled mask maker. He is carved of pule wood, often used in high quality mask such as this. He is then hand painted with a high quality paints. This is a beautiful mask, carved with nice details. Eyes have slits to see and includes rubber strap.
Each mask may have slightly different paint and carving placement. This is not a flaw, but a reflection of the hand crafted origins of this unique product created by Balinese crafts people.
