Shaman Mask Tribal Wood & Pigment Borneo Dayak Indonesia Early 20th century
Tribal wood and pigment Mask from Borneo Dayak Indonesia, early 20th century
Painted wood Dayak tribally used mask with remains of black, red and white pigments. Beautiful aged patina with very little loose paint for the age. Protruding chin, nose and prominent eyebrows & protruding eyes. Grinning mouth outlined with red pigment. The eyes have openings carved in the wood. There is a small hole in the wood just below the right cheek. There is a stick embedded in the wood over the mouth area in the back which is meant to be held in the teeth of the mask wearer.
A very nice example of Indonesian Tribal Ethnic art.
