Vintage Hand Carved Garuda Teak Wood Candelabra Candleholder
Old Garuda Candelabra from Java Indonesia, carved from solid teak wood. Originally used for illumination during Ramayana story shadow puppet plays. The "wings" mounted onto a center pillar of this unique ethnic piece are meant to deflect the wind from blowing out the flaming candle are carved into the form of Garuda, mount of Lord Vishnu & King of the Birds. The wings are hinged using a mortise and tenon type of hinge carved directly into the wood allowing them to fold either to the front or back. The center cup to hold a candle or small oil lamp is also carved from teak. Still original paint as I found this in an antique shop in Indonesia.
A very beautiful & rare collectable, a unique decorators piece that will be sure to ad global ethnic flare to your home or project.
